Focus of NIS 2016
  • To discuss the output of the three industry working groups on issues critical to us on nuclear security. Keynote speakers and panels are being developed.
  • A half-day session with the NGO community on joint panels for Security in Emerging Nuclear Countries and for Nuclear Security Governance Mechanisms will meet on the morning of March 31.
  • The joint session will be followed by an awards luncheon at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (site of the NSS) where members of governments and heads-of-state will be honored by industry.
  • An exhibition will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for countries involved in the summit. There are opportunities for the nuclear industry to have exhibits there as well. The world’s media organizations will also be co-located with us and so there are excellent opportunities to showcase the nuclear industry and its contributions. The Convention Center is in the “security zone” of the summit and so protocols will be developed for access.
  • Other decisions to be finalized include a walk-through of the exhibit by government leaders, and presentation of the nuclear industry’s communique to the NSS.
Working Groups

The NIS working groups serve to focus the efforts of industry leaders on specific areas of importance. A critical aspect of the working groups is to monitor the implementation of recommendations from previous summits. The working groups for 2016 will be:

  • Securing the Use, Storage and Transport of Strategic Nuclear and Radiological Materials
  • Managing the Cyber Threat
  • The Role of the Nuclear Industry Globally
